Earlier this year, NBC reporter Christ Chmura published a segment about Yelp that led him to
conclude he will never trust another online review again (check it out at: https://lnkd.in/eBV6zYSM).
Many Yelp reviewers, including “Yelp Elites”, admit to posting fake positive reviews for payment. Many of them have also posted multiple fake negative reviews for competitors of the businesses paying them!
After working in the consumer leisure recommendations space for over 2 years, our CEO, Shanna Liu, has found a surprisingly high number of reviewers on social media platforms that have also been paid sometimes over $5000 to go to restaurants, bars, shows, events, and more JUST to hype them up – regardless if the places are actually good experiences.
So we thought, what if we could eliminate this duplicity? What if you could effortlessly get right to the source of information on where the best spots in a particular city really are? What if you could ask a pastry chef what their favorite dessert places are, or hit up a professional street artist to find their favorite underground graffiti spots in the city? Enter Seek.
For the last year, we have been on a mission to find and cultivate expert “curators” on a completely free platform, crowdsourcing trusted and curated recommendations from the experts right to consumers. Our curators have been vetted for their expertise and authenticity and their recommendations are truly their personal, unbiased favorites, 100% not paid by the businesses. We are proud to have 3000+ top recommendations in NYC from 200 experts.
